"Signal Media" and South African media holding Africa XP closed the deal for the sale of rights to factual entertainment projects "On the Edge" and "Survivalist".
The Russian factual entertainment program cycles “Survivalist” and “On the Edge” produced by My Planet and Nauka television channels and adapted for international sales by Digital Television Russa will be available to viewers across Africa, Europe, and North America on Thematic TV channels of media holding Africa XP.
The agreement on rights acquisition was signed between Signal Media, an exclusive distributor of Digital Television Russia content, and the South African media holding Africa XP, specializing in creating thematic TV channels for the local market and the African diaspora around the world. The company's portfolio includes 12 TV channels of different genres that are present on the platforms of the largest DTH, DTT, OTT and VOD operators in Africa, Europe, and North America.
"African pay TV industry has shown very positive dynamics in recent years - today it is one of the fastest growing markets with a turnover of over one billion dollars, and the fact that Russian content is in demand in this region confirms its high quality and competitiveness in the international arena once again. We are confident that our projects will harmoniously fit into the air of the channels of Africa XP, making it even more dynamic and interesting for the audience," commented Mikhail Kovalchuk, CEO of Signal Media.
Both projects, broadcasting rights of which were realized, are well known to the Russian audience of “Nauka” and “Mu Planet” TV channels. "On the Edge" is a popular extreme science show. This show explores the risky physical, psychological, and even ethical limits in a human's every day. Dangerously curious topics in the show involve captivating footage in which the host Alexander Koltovoi risks his health and even life. Experts in various scientific fields: pyrotechnics, stuntmen and even rescuers, are involved in the experiments preparation. This allows to investigate every problem multilaterally and receive exhaustive answers to the questions posed.
In "Survivalist" - journalist and TV host Timofey Bazhenov weekly makes extreme trips to make unique shots and acquaint spectators with the world of wild nature, as well as study the abnormal phenomena of nature, clearly demonstrating some amazing facts. He tests the most inhumane conditions and leaves it all for us to witness. He investigates anomalies of nature, illustrating surprising facts.
The deal with the South African media holding was not the first international success of Digital Television Russia content, so in the beginning of the month a deal with the largest state-owned Philippine broadcaster was announced, and in April the purchase by the Discovery Communications Group of rights to broadcast two animated series "Be-be-bears" and "Paper Tales".
The entry of Signal Media and Digital Television Russia to the international market began in October 2016 with a large-scale presentation on the main world telemarket MIPJunior and MIPCOM (Cannes, France).
